Keeping Snakes Away From Your Property or House

When the word snake is mentioned, many people shudder in fear. A lot of people with do an all over body shiver that leaves them covered in goosebumps. Snakes are creepy and can be extremely dangerous. These cold-blooded reptiles are often shy creatures that try to stay away from humans as much as possible. Even then, it’s not always avoidable.

Snakes can be really beneficial in the natural world. They help maintain control of pests such as mice, rats, slugs, other snakes and insects. Even though they are beneficial, they are still not a wanted creature, especially if you have small children or small pets around. Even non-venomous snakes can pose serious health issues. A bite from a non-venomous snake can still cause a human or animal to get very sick. Their fangs are covered with saliva that contains millions of harmful bacteria. Not to mention that the bite itself will hurt.



There are some simple, non-lethal ways to snake-proof your buildings, your home, yards, and attics. Yes, that’s right, even your attic.

If you’ve seen snakes in your home or on your property, first and foremost you need to identify the little trespasser. This will help you take the appropriate measures to prevent them.

When a snake has been found in a building it is typically because they are hunting for food or looking for a place to seek shelter. They typically seek out cool, dark and damp places to hide. If there are cracks in your foundation bigger than a quarter of an inch, it is very possible that a snake can get through.

Make sure your food is in airtight containers and all spills are cleaned up properly. Snakes are seeking food and they can sense it before even seeing it. This includes pet food. It is very common, especially on farms, for snakes to be found around food bins such as silos or troughs. This gives them easy access to the food as well as the other unwelcomed visitors that feed on it. It’s important that you give them as little access as possible.

In order to keep them out of your home, thoroughly examine basement walls and windows on both the inside as well as the outside. This isn’t just exclusive for basements and crawl spaces. Snakes can climb and have been documented as climbing into attics through open windows and vents. So be thorough in your search. If you’ve found a crack or a hole, you can seal it up with wire mesh or screen.

In order to keep snakes away from the outside of your home and yard, reduce their places for hiding. By eliminating these possibilities, you are drastically decreasing the shelter for their food supply. Snakes aren’t the only ones that like to hide in these places. Now, we’ve discussed ways to prevent them from getting into the house and surrounding areas. What on earth are you supposed to do if you find one in your house? No, burning down your house is not a viable option. However, there are some safe, non-lethal methods that can be used to ensure safety for everyone involved.

A common method is using a glue board. It is simple and not extremely expensive. Attach several rodent glue traps to a board such as a 2x4 and position against the base of a wall—where most snakes tend to travel. As the snake brushes against the glue traps, it will become stuck. This is completely non-lethal if they are not left on there for extended periods of time. Afterward, remove the board—watch out for the end that bites—and take it somewhere outside. To remove the snake, simply pour a generous amount of cooking oil over the surface. Do not use motor oil or anything similar because it is toxic to snakes. Before long the snake will be able to slither free and back into nature.

Once you have made sure your home is sealed (as much as possible) from any Charlotte snakes, a natural repellant you can use is sulfur. The strong smell of the powder not only repels the snakes but is non-lethal. A snake’s sense of smell is extremely sensitive. If it smells the offensive odor, it will not enter through that opening.

Another method that can be used but is eventually fatal is moth balls. When placed in specific places—namely along the path snakes travel—they will ingest it. The effects are not immediate, however, it will kill them eventually.

Whatever the case may be, you should always exercise extreme caution when dealing with snakes. Better to be safe than sorry.
